The explosive growth in population we are experiencing, means the world’s food needs are also increasing. Norway is the largest producer of fish in the world, and for producers in Norway an increasing population means a growing market. It also means an increasing demand for aid, new concessions and subsidies from the Norwegian authorities.
The Aquaculture Industry
The quality of our fish produce is recognized world-wide. Increasing demand has led to huge growth in our aquaculture industry. New technology is being developed all the time by the industry. Innovative technical solutions are needed to deal with challenges such as salmon lice, escaped fish and pollution of the seabed. Breeding springs in exposed waters, large production rigs, pharmaceutical and mechanical treatment of salmon lice and fish health are just a few of the development areas.
There is still huge potential for development within fish processing and preparation. It is currently cheaper to do this abroad. Norwegian policy leans increasingly towards subsidizing climate-friendly and sustainable development. This has created an economic incentive for our aquaculture industry to develop green farming-related technology.
