Industry
Industry is one of the cornerstones of modern society and includes the following sectors: Construction, plant and infrastructure, transportation, chemistry, process chemistry, industrial and mechanical engineering, metallurgy, mechanical industry, paper and textile as well as the automotive industry.
Construction, Plants and Infrastructure
Construction, plants and infrastructure is a diverse industry that includes construction techniques on land and offshore. The construction industry ranges from small houses to major industrial buildings. The industry also includes small and large structures on land and offshore, such as oil-related structures and wind turbine structures. Other areas within the construction industry include hydro-electric power structures, such as dam constructions, dam shutters and hydroelectric turbines. Highway bridges, railway bridges, and footbridges as well as constructions related to roads, lakes, sewerage etc. are also included.
Transport
The transport industry involves transport of people and goods. Logistics is essential for ensuring efficient transport. Transportation primarily uses aircraft, trains, trailers/trucks and ships. Important products for transport include fish, timber, oil/gas and cargo.
Chemical Industry and Process Chemistry
The chemical industry is an important sector in Norwegian industry. The chemical industry uses various chemical processes, to produce a range of products from raw materials or intermediates. Process chemistry represents a large part of the assets created in Norway, and includes oil and gas extraction, wood processing, metallurgy and petrochemicals and the pharmaceutical industry.
Industry and Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering includes the construction and production of structural components and equipment for use in products such as cars, planes and ships. It also includes the operation and maintenance of industrial manufacturing processes. Automation of mechanical engineering devices is becoming increasingly important.
Metallurgy
The metallurgical industry is a process industry which manufactures products such as aluminium, steel, iron and iron alloys. The metallurgical industry involves the extraction and refining of metals and alloys using electrical energy.
Mechanical Industry
The mechanical industry is largely made up of processing companies. Production costs are kept down and quality increased by the use of automation and robotization in the industry. The mechanical industry produces technical equipment and machinery, and offshore-related businesses are important clients.
Paper and Textile
The paper industry produces products such as cellulose, paper and cardboard. Paper can be divided into three main groups: Print/printing paper, packaging and hygiene/household paper. In general, the paper industry is a power-intensive process industry that uses large facilities. The textile industry involves industrial production of products such as wire, yarn, fabrics and clothing.
Automotive
The automotive industry includes subcontractors to the automotive industry, which supply items such as vehicle body parts, electronic equipment, and mechanical components.
Industry Players
There is a range of different players within this industry. The construction industry (onshore and offshore) is dominated by a few large players, but also by a larger number of smaller players. The major players tend to use external subcontractors. In the construction industry, building assignments are generally put out to tender, and it is crucial that the players have products and solutions that are competitive with regard to price, quality, and so on.
Why are intellectual property rights important?
Research and development of new, competitive products and solutions are crucial for a company’s success and survival. It is therefore vital to have a considered IP strategy so that intellectual property assets and rights are both developed and protected. Intellectual property rights confer a competitive advantage, and as a rule prevent others from exploiting protected products and solutions. Intellectual property rights can also be licensed to others, which can lead to a significant source of revenue.
