Primary expertise

Harald holds extensive experience in general and strategic patents counselling, patent drafting and prosecution, clearance and IP analysis including due diligence and freedom to operate opinions, as well as patent oppositions, administrative limitation and revocation proceedings, infringement analyses and proceedings. He also conducts patent searches and patent landscape analysis, and has experience as an advisor in patent litigation both in the court and in preparatory work. Harald represents clients before the Norwegian Industrial Property Office, the EPO and PCT authorities.

Harald’s clients span from small Norwegian business to large national and international corporations within the oil & gas, information technology, physics and electronics industries. He also holds extensive experience in advising start-up businesses and research organizations within various business industries.

Harald has given lectures in patent protection in general and held workshops for the industry, and he has lectured at INHA University in South Korea, where he also was a co-writer of the publication «Global Trends and Tasks of Intellectual Property Rights». Harald has been the author of a number of articles in international IPR magazines. He has also contributed regularly in study committees of international IP-organisations such as AIPPI. He has authored articles in scientific publications, such as in Nuclear Instruments and Methods.

Background

Harald holds a B. Sc. specializing in electronics and automation from University of South-Eastern Norway in 1986. He also holds a M. Sc. in Physics from the University of Oslo from 1997, specializing in experimental elementary particle physics.

In 1989, he started his career within measurement technique and electronics at the University of Oslo/European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, where he also contributed to articles. He started as an examiner at the Norwegian Industrial Property Office in 1997. He has also been in charge of database searches for the Patent Department at the Norwegian Industrial Property Office.

In 2000, he started as a patent engineer at the telecom company Ericsson AS, working with research and development departments internally. In 2003, Harald started as a patent attorney at Oslo Patentkontor.

Harald joined Bryn Aarflot in 2007, and was made partner in the firm in 2012.

Publications

Harald has given lectures in patent protection in general and held workshops for the industry. He has also been the author of articles in international IPR magazines as well as co writer of articles for Nuclear and Instruments.

Harald was head of the Norwegian FICPI group, FICPI being the only international NGO whose membership consists exclusively of IP attorneys in private practice, between 2012 and 2017.
In 2017, Harald was elected council member of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office.
